The author posits the WSMA as being an exemplar of innovations of spirituality in higher education. The study responds to calls made by North American scholars for inspiriting the academy by attending to the spiritual dimensions of human experience. This dissertation artfully illuminates intersections of spirituality and feminism in education that remain little known or understood. Through individual and collective processes of self-inquiry, healing and transformation, faculty and students contribute to new knowledge and social practices that can holistically address local and global challenges of gender, social and ecological justice. The woman-centred curriculum re-claims women’s history, pre-history, spiritual experience, social contributions and creative expressions by integrating scholarly research, feminist perspectives and analysis, goddesses, activism, ritual, spiritual practices, and the arts. This graduate course of study originates from the grassroots North American women’s movement, and prepares women for leadership in the pluralistic global culture of the 21st Century. This doctoral dissertation represents a qualitative inquiry into the lived experiences and practices of seven faculty and student alumni, the author included, within an accredited Women’s Spirituality Master of Arts (WSMA) degree program, located in the San Francisco Bay area. As an eros rather than logos way of knowing, kundalini offers depth psychologists a phenomenological perspective into how psyche may grapple with and be transformed by numinous experiences. It also appeared that for people with early childhood trauma, the psyche might initially experience kundalini as a threat. Kundalini often acted as a transcendent function and synchronicities increased. The research was conducted with the intention of answering the questions: In what ways might depth psychology be complementary to or supportive in understanding and integrating a kundalini experience? How might kundalini further inform depth psychology’s understanding about the effects of numinous experience on the personality? The findings showed that kundalini frequently brought psychological complexes to conscious awareness. Specific areas of focus also included tracking synchronicities, and noting emotional and psychological challenges and reactions to experiences of kundalini. Using the methodology of Organic Inquiry the research provides stories from interviews, art and writing resulting from embodied active imagination work, and dreams recorded during the interview process. This research explores how experiences of kundalini impacted five people in the United States, including the researcher herself. Yet experiences of kundalini appear to be occurring with increasing frequency for Westerners. Jung and James Hillman suggested that kundalini as an aspect of Eastern spiritual practice was not appropriate for Westerners.
